The Remembering, Vol 86: Same Soda, 3x the Sugar. Why?

Ten minutes of morning light beats an hour later, real local food headed for school cafeterias, and why the same soda carries three times the sugar depending on where you live.

Get outside before you check your phone tomorrow morning

Did you know that we spend more time indoors than any generation before us? An hour outside does something an hour under fluorescent lights never will. You don't need a study to know that, but the research backs it up anyway.

Here's the part worth acting on: with morning sunlight, timing matters more than duration. Ten minutes outside early in the day does more for you than an hour later on. It's one of the easiest things to change about your day and one of the first things to disappear when a week gets busy.

Paul's newest reel walks through the research and the practical fixes, including how to get outside when your job keeps you at a desk. Start tomorrow, and Lineage coffee on the porch counts.

Real food is headed for the school lunch line

Just in time for back to school, the USDA announced Harvest to Hallways, putting up to $70 million into school kitchen infrastructure and up to $25 million into Farm to School grants that connect districts directly with local farmers and ranchers. We're happy to see it.

What might you notice at your kid's school?

  • Locally raised beef and produce on lunch trays. One Kentucky district already buys beef from farms in its own county.
  • Stoves and cold storage so cafeterias can cook from scratch instead of reheating.

Change this big won't reach every district overnight. Until it reaches yours, the lunchbox is still the easiest real food win of the day. Meat Sticks and the Lineage Bar pack real protein and both survive a backpack until noon.

Same soda. Three times the sugar. It depends on where you live.

A Reuters investigation found that a can of Fanta sold in London has 63 calories, while the same brand sold in India carries three times the sugar, plus an artificial dye that would require a health warning in Europe. India's food regulator had been working toward warning labels on the front of packaging. It abandoned the effort in August 2026 after industry pushback.

A quieter version of that fight is running here. The FDA proposed its own front-of-package rule in January 2025, a simple box showing whether saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars run low, medium, or high. It still is not final. Canada's version became mandatory at the end of 2025.

Until ours lands, the front of the package is marketing and the back is information. Remember that the four seconds it takes to turn something over is the most reliable move you have in a grocery aisle. Real food doesn't need a warning label.

The lunchbox doesn’t have to wait

The USDA just committed real money to getting local food onto school lunch trays, and that progress will take years to reach most cafeterias. Meanwhile the lunchbox aisle hasn't changed. Most bars and snack packs marketed to kids are sugar, seed oils, and fillers wearing a healthy label.

We built ours differently. Meat Snacks are 100% grass-fed and finished beef with no sugar and straight protein. The Lineage Bar delivers 20 grams of protein from grass-fed dairy and collagen, sweetened with raw honey, with no seed oils, no sugar alcohols, and no gums. Every batch is third-party tested for glyphosate, heavy metals, and pesticides.

Quote of the week

“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”

Wendell Berry, The Unsettling of America
